Inspiration
Plastic waste from water bottles releases 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually. A solution to combat this is to use refillable water bottles and try to avoid using plastic water bottles when able. An issue that arises when attempting to go without plastic water bottles is attempting to locate the nearest water fountain: that's where TapNear comes in.
What it does
TapNear attempts to combat the issue of excessive plastic water bottle use by allowing users to identify nearby water fountains in order to refill their reusable water bottle. Water fountains will be identified by users and uploaded in a post that will take in the user's geolocation and create a pin on the map for other users to see.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest issue was learning the React framework and implementing Google Maps or Leaflet into React. Learning the React framework took a good portion of our time. Implimenting Google Maps or Leaflet caused us countless issues. Both my partner and I were new to React and wanted to challenge ourselves but unfortunately, we did not figure everything out within the time constraint.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of our UI created through Figma because it established the general idea for the app and gave us the motivation to continue when we were stuck.
What we learned
This project was a great introduction to React and its capabilities. Even though incomplete, we both learned a lot about designing a product and hope to learn from the mistakes that were made in this project.
What's next for TapNear
Completing the project and allowing for Mobile use.
