Tap-n-Score began with a simple question at a shooting range: "There has to be an easier way to zero a scope." That question inspired a much bigger idea: What if an ordinary paper target could become the bridge between the shooter and digital intelligence? Rather than replacing existing targets, Tap-n-Score transforms them into Smart Targets that provide explainable, measurable, and repeatable feedback from nothing more than a target photo.

How we built it Tap-n-Score was built using ChatGPT, OpenAI Codex, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Node.js, GitHub, and a governed backend architecture. The platform combines computer vision concepts, authoritative geometry, and explainable scoring into a single workflow. Every measurement is validated against known target dimensions, allowing shooters to receive transparent corrections and permanent digital Shooter Experience Cards (SEC) instead of unexplained scores. Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was not writing code—it was creating an architecture that shooters could trust. We learned that accurate measurements require more than computer vision. They require governed authority, repeatable geometry, and explainable decision-making. Every result had to be based on measurable physical reality rather than estimation, leading us to develop an architecture where the same evidence always produces the same outcome.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Created an explainable after-shot intelligence platform. Developed Smart Target architecture that enhances existing paper targets. Built the Shooter Experience Card (SEC) to permanently preserve shooter performance. Created governed scoring and correction workflows. Demonstrated that existing paper targets can become intelligent digital experiences without changing the targets themselves. Built a reusable architecture capable of supporting multiple shooting disciplines.

What we learned

AI became much more than a coding assistant. It became a collaborative design partner. Throughout this project we discovered that architecture, governance, explainability, and trust are just as important as algorithms. One of our guiding principles became: "Reality gets the final vote." That philosophy shaped every technical decision made during the development of Tap-n-Score

What's next for Tap-n-Score Targets Explaining After-Shot Intelligence

Our vision is to expand Tap-n-Score into a universal Smart Target platform supporting shooting disciplines across recreational, competitive, training, and professional environments. Future work includes expanding the Smart Target catalog, supporting additional organizations, building partnerships with ranges and manufacturers, enhancing explainable analytics, and making measurable after-shot intelligence accessible to every shooter through a simple target photo.
