Inspiration
Businesses show their support for their community by organizing donation campains. Hosting a donation box at the cash register is an efficient way for businesses and customers to get involved and help local charties by donating their spare change. I have seen those boxes and wanted to donate but did not have cash, that inspired me to find a cost effective way to replace the traditional donation boxes with contactless payments. Tap and Give is a low cost donation terminal designed to be hosted at retail locations near the cash register, where customers have the payment card on hand and can easily tap to donate for local charities.
What it does
It is an android application running on an tablet or phone that invites donnors to tap and donate using a Square reader. An acrylic case protects the componets and is designed to fit in the counter or be mounted in a stand. Sponsored charities receive the donations deposited directly in their Square account.
How we built it
This prototype was built using a low cost Onn 8" Android tablet from Wallmart, a Square reader and an 3 mm acrylic sheets cut with laser to form layers that create the case, the Android application is available for download from google play and the files to cut the acrylic are available for download. The terminal can be placed over the counter where customers can easily tap when paying, or it can be mounted in a comercial stand available in Amazon. The donation terminal is intended to be supervised and indoors.
Challenges we ran into
To find easily available components and integrate them into a design that minimizes the cost of the unit, and that can be easily fabricated locally.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Using acrylic sheets to create a case and having Square POS integrated into an android application. Design the Android application that can function as a donation terminal where donors select the amount to donate, or can accept continues donations for the same denomination with minimum user interaction.
What we learned
We learn how to integrate Square SDK into a practical solution for accepting donations.
What's next for Tap and Give donation terminal
Create different DIY kits that charities or business can buy and deploy to accept donations.
