Inspiration

According to research by Vanderweerd et al. (2006), elder neglect and mistreatment is a severe problem that affects the lives of thousands of older people and causes emotional problems such as sadness, feelings of inadequacy, self-loathing, and poor self-esteem. It has been associated with health concerns such as immunologic malfunction and higher mortality, as well as causing family grief, poor daily functioning, and cognitive impairments. This is further supported by Herndon (2019). Because of cognitive and memory impairment, people with dementia may be more vulnerable to abuse or neglect. The capacity to move or speak is hampered in the latter stages. Therefore, it is important that older loved ones feel safe, supported, and loved for a better quality of life.

What it does

In line with the aging and well-being track, TANDA is an easy-to-use platform for family members to collaborate and create an album to help refresh the memories of Alzheimer’s patients. TANDA is as simple as inputting your information as it converts it to a digital album, capable of video and audio playback.

How we built it

There are three components to TANDA: the introductory website; a mobile application for the family members; and the album viewer application for the dementia patient.

The introductory website is hosted on WIX and aims to promote the project and gather intellectual, financial, and human resources.

The proposed mobile application allows all family members, regardless of location, to update the patient’s album of their recent life events. We prototyped this on Figma.

Lastly, the album viewer application features a simple 2 button user interface, a warm and calming color palette, and other accessibility features such as text-to-speech hover and mother tongue language options. We first prototyped the website as well as the album viewer application features on Figma, before building them using CSS and HTML on Replit.

Challenges we ran into

As many of us live in different timezones and have busy schedules, communication was quite difficult. However, we managed to delegate the work well and finish the prototypes in an efficient manner.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We felt accomplished that we had managed to complete our prototypes in such a short span of time and managed to polish the designs of the Figmas and Wix! In addition, we had managed to incorporate some features into our website, such as text-to-speech, translation, and a prototype sign-up form.

What we learned

Through this hackathon, we were able to learn more about Alzheimer's and conceptualise an idea to help them and their families through this process. In addition, we also became more familiar with rapid prototyping on Figma and web development.

What's next for Tanda

The project aims to reach families through recommendations from doctors, caregivers, nursing homes, and support groups, as well as an active social media presence, raising dementia awareness.

Besides the application, TANDA should partner with various organizations to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia in patients and family dynamics.

We also hope to add new features to the web application, such as accessibility tools for the elderly who may be visually impaired and a backend server for the application.
