Inspiration
We were all having problems with not knowing where to access the food trucks on campus. We didn't know where students' favorite food vendors were located and at what time. So we created a website to solve this while keeping ease of use and reliability in mind.
What it does
This website allows food truck owners to post their location on a live and interactive map where customers can see their general location and view their menu at the same time. Additionally, website users can submit "truck spottings" which will add the food truck to the list if not already on it.
How we built it
In the beginning, we brainstormed ideas of the required steps and functions that we thought this website would need to properly assist users. We then filtered out ideas that would not be worth the time or would not benefit the users. We then built it using a frontend-backend framework using HTML, and CSS for client-side design, and we used JavaScript for the backend database. We also used Leaflet for an interactive map with markers and locations that link to Google Maps for directions.
Challenges we ran into
We all had relatively beginner knowledge of web development as a whole and most of the time was spent learning through trial and error. Another challenge was finding an efficient way for all four of us to work on the project without overwriting each other's work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of overcoming the preceding challenges in a timely manner ultimately speeding up our developing process. The biggest accomplishment, however, was being able to produce a working product that enabled us to learn and grow as a team and as individuals.
What we learned
We learned web development to a heightened and more practical level than what we had known before. We learned how to deploy, build, and integrate websites to produce useful software for users.
What's next for TAMU Truck Track
We are looking to increase reliability and user experience on TamuTruckTrack while expanding to other schools and campuses because we believe all students should be able to access their favorite local food trucks!
