Inspiration
As we brainstormed ideas, a fond memory surfaced—those fun times we spent playing with play money, pogs, or teks. It dawned on us that these simple games were perhaps our earliest encounters with the concept of finance. This led us to a thought-provoking question: When did we ever have the chance to truly learn about finances?
The answer became clear: we didn’t. It’s only now, as young adults, that we’re learning about the importance of financial literacy. While we feel fortunate to have this opportunity, we can’t help but wish the same for others.
This realization drove us to dig deeper. After thorough research, we uncovered two sobering truths:
- Filipinos rank among the lowest in Southeast Asia when it comes to financial literacy.
- This gap can be addressed by introducing financial education early on, fostering a culture of financial awareness and responsibility from a young age.
What it does
TALLY is an interactive platform designed to bridge the financial literacy gap in the Philippines. By gamifying financial concepts, TALLY introduces the fundamentals of money management to individuals, especially the youth, in a fun, engaging, and approachable way.
Key Features Task-Based Learning: Students earn points allowance by completing tasks like homework, cleaning, or helping peers, simulating real-world work and earnings.
Rewards Marketplace: Points can be redeemed for rewards like school supplies, privileges, or treats, teaching budgeting and decision-making.
Gamification: Achievements, leaderboards, and mini-games keep students motivated and engaged while reinforcing financial habits.
Teacher Controls: Teachers manage tasks, rewards, and point systems, ensuring the platform aligns with classroom goals.
TALLY blends education and entertainment to build a generation of financially literate individuals, empowering them to make smarter decisions for the future.
How we built it
After extensive brainstorming and refining our concept, we dedicated our time to bringing TALLY to life using FlutterFlow for the frontend and Supabase for the backend. These powerful tools allowed us to quickly build a scalable, user-friendly platform that meets our goals while ensuring a seamless experience for both students and teachers. With an intuitive design and robust features, we’ve created an engaging solution to promote financial literacy in a fun, interactive way.
Challenges we ran into
Due to financial constraints and the disapproval of our Firebase account, we were unable to proceed with our original plan. This led us to spend considerable time researching alternative backend services. After discovering Supabase, we had to quickly learn and adapt to the platform, which presented its own set of challenges and slowed our progress. Additionally, the SDG themes provided weren’t what we had initially expected, so we took it upon ourselves to identify a pressing issue we were truly passionate about solving. Despite these setbacks, we persevered and focused on delivering a solution within the time constraints.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to be part of the teams accepted into this year's InnOlympics 2025. Despite the challenges, we successfully conceptualized, built, and finalized our idea within the given time constraints. As a group of second-year students, we take great pride in representing PLM and showcasing our dedication, creativity, and resilience.
What we learned
Thanks to our mentors, we gained valuable insights into the overall development process of an application. We learned how to adapt to challenges as they arose and explored different tech stacks, understanding how to apply them effectively. Our collaboration skills improved significantly, and we honed our ability to work efficiently under time constraints. This experience taught us the importance of flexibility, teamwork, and problem-solving throughout the development journey.
What's next for TALLY - Teach and Learn Life Yields
TALLY is a passion project that we are eager to continue developing. Our goal is to integrate AI to provide personalized financial learning experiences for students, improving the overall User Experience. Additionally, we aim to expand TALLY’s reach by marketing it to classrooms across the Philippines, empowering more students to learn financial literacy in an engaging and interactive way. In the future, we hope to introduce advanced features such as real-time financial tracking, more customizable tasks, and expanded reward systems. We also envision collaborating with educational institutions and local businesses to enhance the app’s value and make financial literacy accessible to even more learners.
