🗣️ TalkTrek – Speech Practice Buddy
🚀 Inspiration
The idea for TalkTrek came from one of our builder's baby brother, who is currently undergoing speech therapy in his kindergarten. Seeing his journey made me realize how important accessible and engaging speech practice tools can be—especially for young children who may not have easy access to professional help. We wanted to create something that makes pronunciation practice fun, supportive, and interactive so that kids can gain confidence in speaking while enjoying the process! 🎉
🏆 What It Does
TalkTrek is a kid-friendly web app that helps children practice pronunciation through an interactive, real-time speech feedback system. Here's how it works:
🔹 Records the user's voice 🗣️
🔹 Transcribes speech into text using AI ✍️
🔹 Highlights pronunciation mistakes and suggests personalized improvements ✅
🔹 Provides friendly, encouraging feedback to keep kids engaged 🎨
The app turns speech therapy into a playful learning experience, helping children improve pronunciation while making them excited about speaking!
🛠️ How We Built It
- 🎨 Frontend: Built using HTML + CSS + JavaScript to create a fun, easy-to-use interface for kids.
- 📝 Speech-to-Text: Uses the Google Speech-to-Text API for real-time transcription.
- 📊 Pronunciation Analysis: A custom feedback engine detects phoneme mismatches and integrates with ChatGPT API to provide simple, constructive feedback for young learners.
🏔️ Challenges We Ran Into
🎭 Designing Engaging Feedback – We had to find the right balance between useful pronunciation corrections and fun, encouraging interactions that keep kids motivated.
🚀 Low-Latency Processing – We optimized the pipeline to make sure feedback appears instantly, creating a smooth, real-time experience.
🎉 Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
✅ Designed a Kid-Friendly UI – A bright, intuitive interface that keeps children engaged and eager to practice.
✅ Effective Speech Feedback – Our system successfully identifies mispronunciations and provides constructive, positive guidance.
✅ End-to-End Speech Workflow – From recording to transcription to feedback, we built a seamless, interactive learning tool.
✅ Making a Real Impact – Knowing that this project could help other kids, like my brother, build confidence in their speech makes it all worth it. ❤️
📚 What We Learned
💡 User-Centered Design – Kids interact with technology differently than adults, so we focused on simplicity, engagement, and accessibility.
💡 Speech-to-Text Optimization – Working with voice input showed us the challenges of real-time audio processing, especially for younger speakers.
🔮 What's Next for TalkTrek
🔹 Expanding Language Support 🌎 – Adding multilingual speech recognition and feedback.
🔹 Gamification & Rewards 🏆 – Introducing badges, levels, and challenges to motivate continued practice.
🔹 Iterative Development – Testing with real users (kids!) and gathering feedback to help refine the experience.
🔹 Teacher & Parent Dashboard 👩🏫 – A portal for educators and parents to track progress and customize lessons.
