The history of the project

Tales of the Sun - Céline is a science fiction short film made with AI. In addition to creating a universe and telling a story, this project aims to experiment with artificial intelligence in order to learn and understand its potential. The film tells the story of Céline who, after being accused of an attack, must escape from her planet.

Tales of the Sun - Céline was conceived as part of a competition organized by Chroma Labs. The ambition was to create a science fiction short film that left plenty of room for creativity, but in a very realistic style. With animation already playing a major role in the AI sector, we wanted to see if it was possible to achieve high-quality rendering in a work similar to a film.

Once the script was written, we defined more precisely the visual references and style we wanted for our short film. Something very realistic, but different from the very urban and gray settings found in works such as Foundation. We wanted something more colorful and fanciful, like the works created by Moebius.

The main stages of the creation process

We used Nano Banana to obtain initial images and then worked with Seedream to achieve a more realistic rendering. However, it was difficult to create an entire storyboard and place the characters correctly in the scenes, as the AI was sometimes unpredictable or unfamiliar with proportions.

In addition, the transition from image to video was complicated and time-consuming. The rushes are often only partially usable, the rendering often lacks realism, and the characters are often poorly placed or move inconsistently. This meant going back and forth between generating images and generating videos, especially for action scenes where it is difficult to achieve a realistic result. The entire creative process was a long and arduous task that required a great deal of patience.

Fortunately, Veo 3.1 allowed us to save time on the voiceover for the short film —especially since editing highlights missing shots and requires new generations.

What we are proud of

We are proud to have achieved a consistent result over such a “long” period of time and to have obtained a fairly realistic rendering, particularly for certain scenes such as the dialogue between Claude and Céline. We are also happy with our characters.

What's next for Tales of the sun ?

The story of Tales of the Sun doesn't end there. We are so pleased with the final result of the project that we would like to continue telling stories in this universe. This could be a direct sequel to the project, or stories related to clues scattered throughout the short film, such as a story dedicated to the “fishermen's hut,” the “cult of the sun,” or even one centered on a Zluton guard.

Similarly, like Star Wars Visions, we would like to experiment with different visual styles, such as Western or Asian animation, but also more conceptual things, such as animation in an impressionist style or, conversely, in a 17th-century French classicist style.
