Inspiration

I’ve used expense-splitting apps for years, especially with my wife and while traveling. As a product designer, I always felt the experience could be simpler, cleaner and more enjoyable. That’s why I created TakeControl.

What it does

TakeControl helps couples, friends and groups split expenses, track balances and see who owes whom without spreadsheets or manual calculations.

It also includes multiple currencies, offline support, voice-added expenses, receipt scanning and smart balance simplification.

How I built it

I designed the product in Figma and built the app with Flutter and Dart for iOS and Android.

The backend runs on Supabase, with RevenueCat for subscriptions and Resend for transactional emails. AI-assisted development also played a big role throughout the process.

Challenges and learnings

The biggest challenge was handling all the edge cases behind shared expenses while keeping the experience simple.

Building TakeControl taught me a lot about mobile development, databases, subscriptions and product engineering, while reinforcing something I strongly believe in: users shouldn’t have to deal with the complexity behind the product.
