Inspiration
The theme of the 2023 McGill Girls who Code Create-A-Thon is ‘education’. We decided that the issue that we wanted to become more educated on, and raise awareness about, is violence against women.
What it does
So, we created a website to summarize the most important facts about violence against women in Canada, as well as the resources available to survivors. Our hope is that this site helps to demystify and destigmatize what violence towards women (or people of other genders) looks like, and give useful information about safety and resources for women who are in domestic violence situations.
How we built it
We used HTML and JavaScript to build this website from scratch, with help from the bootstrap styling templates.
Challenges we ran into
The page navigation was a bit tricky, but we resolved that by organizing our code into multiple files. Another significant challenge was loading data from a JSON file and piping it into an HTML table. In the end, we did not manage this as the JSON file simply was not being accessed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
For a website that was built from scratch in less than a day, we think it looks pretty nice. Another technical accomplishment that we're proud of is having the postal code search feature for shelters. We're most proud of having accomplished our goal of providing information and resources related to violence against women.
What we learned
We learned a LOT about HTML and JavaScript. This includes structuring the website elements, linking pages to one another, and of course trying to make it all look pretty. We also learned some statistics about violence against women in Canada, as well as the number and kinds of shelters that there are to support women in Canada.
What's next for Take Action: Raising Awareness about Violence Against Women
Future improvements to this site would include a more comprehensive and detailed database of the women’s shelters in Canada, as well as a page dedicated to Indigenous women and their specific experiences with violence and the resources available to them. We would also make a page which directs people to where they can make donations to nonprofits to support survivors. Of course, we would also want to broaden then scope beyond Canada.
