Inspiration TakaPoints was inspired during an Africa's Talking Hackathon, where we noticed the overwhelming amount of plastic waste left behind after events. We saw an opportunity to create a fun, engaging, and rewarding solution that could incentivize people to recycle. Our aim is to tackle plastic waste and promote sustainability through a gamified system.

What it does TakaPoints is a platform that uses smart bins with IoT sensors to track recycling efforts. Users earn points for every plastic item they recycle, which they can redeem for rewards like discounts or cash. It promotes responsible waste management while providing real-time data to waste collection companies for efficient operations.

How we built it We combined IoT technology with a mobile app. The IoT sensors detect and track the number of plastic items deposited into our smart bins. The data is then sent to the app, where users can view their recycling history, earn points, and redeem rewards. The system was built by integrating backend software, IoT hardware, and a user-friendly interface.

Challenges we ran into A key challenge was ensuring accurate data collection through the IoT sensors, which required fine-tuning to detect specific materials. We also faced difficulties in establishing partnerships for our rewards system, but we managed to secure local businesses over time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We successfully created a functioning prototype that integrates IoT sensors with an app, making waste collection more engaging and efficient. Our system has sparked interest in communities and local businesses, driving greater awareness of plastic waste management.

What we learned We learned that gamification can significantly boost user engagement in recycling efforts. Additionally, real-time data can greatly improve the efficiency of waste collection operations. Collaboration among different sectors (tech, business, and environment) is key to achieving sustainability goals.

What's next for TakaPoints Our next steps include launching a pilot in major cities, expanding our partnerships, and refining the platform to include more features. We plan to scale TakaPoints to cover more types of recyclable materials and integrate further incentives for users. Our vision is to implement TakaPoints across East Africa to combat waste and promote a sustainable future.
