Work on Taiga.io started over 3 years ago. Developers at the Spain-based software development company, Kaleidos.net were dissatisfied with the existing project mananagement tools. They were all too clunky, bloated with features and not attractive to use. Project Management tools tends to stay open all day on a developer's browser tab and the existing tools were just not meeting their needs.
The team created for themselves what would later become known as Taiga.io. Excited by what they had built, and hoping that others would respond to it, In April 2014 we decided to spin off the venture, raise capital and create a standalone company.
Though we see applicability in numerous areas, we decided to address the world of software coders & designers. The market is very large and its participants are the leading edge of the change in how people work. The emergence of Agile practices and the enormous distributed workforce of coders who now collaborate on coding tasks are there to be brought together in one single platform, and that's what Taiga.io offers.
Taiga.io launched in October 2014 and the response took us by surprise. In 48 hours we hit the #1 trending position in the reference site Hackernews.com. On Github, the Taiga.io development team, and its code repositories both also hit #1 on GitHub and remeained there for numerous days.
As of end of March 2015, there are over 35,000 registered developers, designers and project owners who have initiated over 32,000 projects. Taiga.io was named one of the top 10 Open Source Tools of 2014 by Red hat-sponsored Opensource.com and was #1 in HackerNews within 48 hrs of launch. Taiga's GitHub repositories also became #1 in the days following it's launch.
Taiga.io now has a small but vibrant community of developers.
