Inspiration

TaiChiCare was inspired by the urgent need to improve wellness and mobility for the elderly in Hong Kong, where many face chronic conditions such as arthritis, hypertension, diabetes, and scoliosis. With a significant portion of seniors not meeting WHO physical activity guidelines, and social isolation further reducing exercise adherence, TaiChiCare aims to provide accessible, personalized Tai Chi routines combined with social support to overcome these barriers.

What it does

TaiChiCare is a senior-focused mobile app that delivers AI-personalized Tai Chi exercise plans tailored to individual health conditions and capabilities. It fosters social connection through local group finders and peer buddy systems, offers an elderly-friendly interface with voice commands and large icons, and integrates safety features like fall detection and progress tracking to support independent, safe exercise.

How we built it

The backend and basic frontend were built with Replit AI, integrating features like chatbot voice support and personalized exercises. Google Stitch was employed to draft the user interface with live backend data connections, enabling real-time functionalities such as user profiles, group finders. The interface design was then refined in Figma to create a senior-friendly experience featuring large icons, simple navigation, and clear instructions for accessibility. Throughout development, a user-centered approach prioritized simplicity, voice commands, and offline capabilities to ensure ease of use for elderly users with diverse technology skills and we also implemented Google Gemini AI into our chatbox system.

Challenges we ran into

Key challenges included overcoming technology adoption barriers among elderly users, balancing personalized exercise effectiveness with safety, motivating sustained engagement, and addressing privacy concerns around sensitive health data.

What we learned

We learned the importance of simplicity in technology design for seniors, the value of community trust for engagement, and the need to combine health personalization with safety features. The project highlighted the potential for AI-driven personalized wellness solutions in eldercare.
