TAHANAN: Innolympics 2026 Submission Narrative Track: Pangarap sa Malusog na Pamamuhay: Prevention and Everyday Wellness

Inspiration We were inspired by the everyday struggles of Filipino families. Our team members witnessed firsthand how their parents juggled caring for aging grandparents while managing their own health, how stress fragmented family communication, and how simple wellness tasks—taking medicine, checking in on loved ones—became overwhelming burdens rather than sustainable routines.

The data confirmed what we observed: 34% of Filipinos feel stressed frequently, 50% of elderly struggle with medication adherence, and social isolation increases mortality risk by 43%. Yet existing solutions were fragmented, expensive, or difficult to navigate.

We realized the problem wasn't that families didn't care—it was that they lacked a simple, unified way to coordinate wellness together. TAHANAN emerged from this insight: a family-first wellness app that makes healthy routines realistic and stress-reducing, not stress-adding.

What It Does TAHANAN is a family care and connection app that helps Filipino families stay connected through:

Daily Mood Check-ins - Family members share their emotional state with mood-specific encouragement, enabling early detection of stress and depression

Quick Family Check-ins - One-tap access to check on loved ones, send messages, or make calls directly from the app

Smart Reminders - Create wellness reminders (medicine, exercise, meals) assigned to family members with social accountability

Medication Adherence Tracking - Monitor who took their medicine and when, leveraging family support to improve the 50% adherence rate

Family Location Map - See where family members are (with privacy controls) for safety and peace of mind

Emergency Alert - Toggle emergency status to instantly alert all family members

Family Notes Feed - Share quick updates and encouragement within the family group

Core Value: TAHANAN transforms the family from a source of stress into a source of strength, making wellness sustainable through connection rather than burden.

How We Built It Technology Stack Frontend: Flutter (cross-platform iOS/Android) Backend: Django + Django REST Framework Database: SQLite (scalable to PostgreSQL) Authentication: JWT tokens Mapping: flutter_map for location display Development Approach Phase 1: Research & Design

Analyzed Philippine health data and caregiver burden statistics Conducted user research with families managing elderly care Designed intuitive UI suitable for all age groups Created data-backed feature specifications Phase 2: MVP Development

Built 10 core features focused on family coordination and wellness Implemented secure authentication with family-based data isolation Created responsive UI for 4.5" to 6.5" mobile screens Developed 15+ API endpoints for seamless data sync Phase 3: Integration & Testing

Integrated SMS and call functionality for direct family contact Tested medication adherence workflows with real-world scenarios Optimized performance for low-bandwidth environments Built graceful error handling for API failures Architecture Highlights Feature-based frontend structure for scalability JWT-protected endpoints ensuring family data privacy Offline capability for viewing cached family data Immediate UI feedback (reminders vanish when completed) for psychological reward Challenges We Ran Into

  1. Balancing Privacy and Visibility Challenge: How much family data should be visible? Too much feels intrusive; too little defeats the purpose.

Solution: Implemented granular data isolation—users only see their own family's data. Location sharing is optional. Emergency status is visible to all but requires explicit toggle.

  1. Designing for Multi-Generational Use Challenge: The app needed to work for tech-savvy millennials AND elderly users with limited smartphone experience.

Solution: Kept UI extremely simple with large touch targets, clear visual feedback, and minimal text. Used color-coded mood indicators and icons instead of complex menus.

  1. Medication Adherence Without Being Intrusive Challenge: Reminders can feel nagging or controlling, especially for independent elderly users.

Solution: Framed reminders as family support, not surveillance. Family members assign reminders together, and the UI provides positive reinforcement (cards vanish when completed) rather than guilt-inducing notifications.

  1. Handling Offline Scenarios Challenge: Not all users have consistent internet connectivity.

Solution: Implemented local caching with shared preferences, allowing users to view family data offline. Sync happens automatically when connection returns.

  1. Integrating Phone Actions Challenge: Making it seamless to call or message family members directly from the app.

Solution: Used url_launcher to open native dialer and SMS apps, reducing friction and avoiding the need to build in-app calling infrastructure for MVP.

Accomplishments We're Proud Of

  1. Data-Backed Every Feature Every core feature is backed by peer-reviewed research and credible statistics. We didn't build features based on assumptions—we built them based on validated problems.

  2. Cultural Alignment TAHANAN honors Filipino values of family and filial piety while modernizing how families coordinate care. The app leverages cultural strengths rather than fighting against them.

  3. Accessibility for All Ages Designed an interface that works for both tech-savvy users and elderly family members with limited smartphone experience. No complex menus, no jargon, just clear actions.

  4. Practical MVP Scope Delivered 10 core features in a focused MVP that solves real problems without feature creep. Every feature directly addresses a user pain point.

  5. Scalable Architecture Built with Django and Flutter—proven, scalable technologies that can grow from MVP to millions of users. Clear separation of concerns and documented API makes future development straightforward.

  6. Prevention-Focused Design Rather than treating health crises, TAHANAN prevents them through daily mood tracking, medication adherence, and social connection—all evidence-based interventions.

What We Learned

  1. Family-Based Care is Powerful Research shows that positive family ties have significant positive impact on overall well-being of older family members. Technology should facilitate this, not replace it.

  2. Simplicity is Competitive Advantage In a market flooded with complex health apps, simplicity stands out. Users don't want features; they want solutions to specific problems.

  3. Data Drives Design Starting with research—not assumptions—led to better feature prioritization. We knew exactly why each feature mattered and could explain it to users and stakeholders.

  4. Context Matters Building for the Philippines required understanding local culture, economic constraints, and health infrastructure. One-size-fits-all global solutions don't work.

  5. Prevention Beats Treatment The health and economic case for prevention is overwhelming. Medication adherence, stress management, and social connection prevent costly hospitalizations and interventions.

  6. Multi-Generational Design is Hard but Worth It Making an app work for both 20-year-olds and 70-year-olds required constant iteration and testing, but it's essential for a family app.

We're building more than an app—we're building a digital home where families feel supported, connected, and empowered to manage their wellness together.

In a world where 34% of Filipinos feel stressed frequently and 50% of elderly struggle with medication adherence, TAHANAN offers a simple, data-backed solution: make healthy routines realistic, sustainable, and stress-reducing through the power of family connection.

We believe that when families coordinate care, everyone wins—healthier individuals, less stressed caregivers, and stronger communities. TAHANAN makes this possible.

Pangarap sa Malusog na Pamamuhay starts at home. TAHANAN brings the family together.
