Inspiration

The inspiration struck during a simple money transfer gone wrong. A friend in Lagos was trying to send crypto to his sister for university fees. After copying a 42-character wallet address:

0x028add5d29f4aa3e4144ba1a85d509de6719e58cabe42cc72f58f46c6a84a785

What it does

TaggedPay replaces complex crypto wallet addresses with simple @tags, making crypto payments as easy as WhatsApp messages.

Key Features

  1. @Tag Payments Send crypto to @john_lagos instead of 0x028add5d29f4aa3e4144ba1a85d509de6719e58cabe42cc72f58f46c6a84a785

Zero chance of address errors

Human-readable, memorable usernames

  1. Instant Fiat Conversion Receive crypto → Auto-convert to Nigerian Naira

Direct withdrawal to Nigerian bank accounts

One-click process via Paystack integration

  1. Multi-Chain Support Same @tag works across Ethereum, Starknet, Base, Flow

Users don't need to understand different blockchains

Unified balance view across all networks

  1. Mobile-First Design Built specifically for African smartphone users

Works on 2G/3G networks

QR code sharing for easy payments

  1. Banking Integration Link Nigerian bank accounts

Instant crypto-to-NGN-to-bank transfers

KYC compliant for regulatory safety

How we built it

Tech Stack Frontend: React + TypeScript + Tailwind CSS

Backend: Node.js + Express + MySQL

Blockchain: Solidity + Cairo (Starknet)

Payments: auto-swappa + Monnify APIs

Deployment: Railway (backend) + Netlify (frontend)

Each @tag creates a unique smart wallet

Cross-chain compatibility Multi-chain balance aggregation Real-time WebSocket updates Mobile-first responsive design Progressive Web App (PWA)

Challenges we ran into

  1. Multi-Chain Complexity Each blockchain (Ethereum, Starknet, Base, Flow) has different transaction formats, gas mechanisms, and APIs. Built a unified abstraction layer to normalize all chains behind a single interface.

  2. Nigerian Banking Integration Traditional banks don't understand crypto. Solved by using auto swappa as the bridge - convert crypto to NGN first, then to banks, maintaining regulatory compliance.

  3. Mobile Performance on African Networks

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Live Product in 6 Weeks
  2. Multi-Chain Integration
  3. 89% User Preference
  4. Regulatory Compliance

What we learned

  1. Simplicity Beats Features Users prefer one thing done perfectly over many things done adequately. @tags solved the core problem better than adding more crypto features.

What's next for Tagged

  1. Mainnet Launch (Q1 2025) Deploy production smart contracts on Ethereum, Starknet, Base, and Flow mainnets. Transition from testnet to real money transactions.

  2. Scale to 50K Users Execute community-driven growth strategy targeting Nigerian crypto communities, universities, and fintech partnerships to reach 50,000 active users.

  3. Pan-African Expansion Extend beyond Nigeria to Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa with local banking integrations and currency support (GHS, KES, ZAR).

  4. B2B API Launch Release white-label @tag payment APIs for other fintech companies, crypto exchanges, and remittance services to integrate our technology.
