The inspiration behind creating TagAlong emerged from recognizing a significant challenge affecting a vast portion of our society—loneliness. According to the HHS survey on Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation (2023), about half of US adults experience loneliness, a situation exacerbated by several factors:

The COVID-19 Pandemic: The global health crisis led to prolonged periods of social distancing, discouraging large gatherings and significantly limiting social interactions. This isolation contributed to a rise in mental health issues, including depression and anxiety, highlighting the essential human need for connection.

Increasing Solo Living: More people are choosing to live alone, distancing themselves from the traditional communal living settings that naturally foster daily interactions and social bonds. Given these circumstances, we observed the resulting trend—an increasingly socially isolated community.

This observation sparked a realization: there's a profound need for solutions that can reintegrate individuals into the social fabric of everyday life, especially in settings that are not inherently designed to be communal.

TagAlong was created as a direct response to this need. Our platform aims to bridge the gap between the desire for meaningful social interactions and the modern realities that often hinder such experiences. By making it easier for individuals to find companionship for various activities, from attending concerts to simple walks in the park, TagAlong strives to mitigate the effects of social isolation and enrich lives through shared experiences. This not only addresses the symptoms of loneliness but also fosters a sense of community and belonging, crucial for mental and emotional well-being.

How Tag Along was built

Tag Along was built by a team of four students developers. For more specifics:

Infrastructure & Data: Leveraging the robustness of Google Cloud, we created a secure and scalable foundation that can handle the complex data demands of our platform. Python's versatility for data processing, coupled with Firebase’s real-time database features, empowers us to manage and synchronize user data effectively.

User Experience & Design: React's component-based framework and Next.js's server-side rendering are at the core of our engaging and responsive front-end. Figma was instrumental in crafting the user interface, with CSS bringing the design to life. Chroma added the finishing touches with subtle animations that enrich the user experience.

AI & Personalization: The AI-driven core of Tag Along, powered by fetch.ai’s multi-agent systems, smartly connects users with events and companions by analyzing preferences and behaviors. TypeScript's reliability refines our backend logic, ensuring a seamless user journey.

Interactive Elements: To foster community within the platform, Together.ai allows for real-time interactions and updates, while custom shaders created through Shadcn deliver optimized graphics, ensuring that every user interaction is not only smooth but also visually stunning.

Integration of Fetch.AI: One of the most formidable hurdles was incorporating Fetch.AI into our platform. The complexity of the multi-agent system required a deep dive into extensive documentation and relentless troubleshooting to ensure smooth functionality within our product. The intricacies of the model demanded a meticulous approach, as we painstakingly tweaked and refined the integration.

Designing Seamless Workflows: Crafting the workflow and dataflow of Tag Along presented a maze of complexity. With numerous components needing to work in harmony, outlining a clear and efficient data path was a monumental task. Our commitment to a seamless user experience meant that we had to consider every possible interaction and data exchange, resulting in a sophisticated and well-orchestrated system.

Delving into and applying new libraries and frameworks was a challenge, but mastering them to create the various components of our project has been immensely rewarding.
