Inspiration

Have you ever desperately needed groceries but had no car to go to the grocery store? Or been in a class where you knew absolutely no one else? Four UNC students realized how common these problems were among college students and wanted to develop a web app to solve it!

What it does

Tagalong is a social networking site that aims to connect college students based on mutual needs or interests, which are broadly categorized as academic, errands, and events. For example, users can create an academic post looking for a study buddy, or an events post looking for a ride to a concert and is willing to bring car snacks. We encourage users to collaborate and build connections in a way that is more sustainable, budget-friendly, and community focused.

How we built it

We built this web app using Angular, so we worked with Typescript, HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap.

Challenges we ran into

Two of our team members had no experience working with Angular and TypeScript prior to this project, so we allocated significant time towards teaching them some basics. We also frequently had to resolve merge conflicts and navigate branching for the first time, which never stopped being a little intimidating.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built our app using CI/CD techniques, which we were not super experienced with at the start, yet that we became more comfortable with throughout the process. We also utilized everybody's programming (specifically design versus functionality) strengths in a way that was efficient.

What we learned

Angular and TypeScript, CI/CD techniques, some Bootstrap, and how to get locally-sourced images deployed on our final site.

What's next for Tagalong

In-app messaging service, a search bar for each feed, and adding more customizations to each profile (maybe linking to Spotify or Instagram API).
