Inspiration

In elite tournament football, matches are decided in defensive transition and under high-pressing traps. When a team loses possession in their own third or midfield, opponent counter-attacks materialize into shots within 8 seconds before defensive rest structures can reorganize.

Yet today, professional tactical analysis is stuck between two broken extremes:

  1. Multi-thousand-dollar enterprise suites (StatsBomb IQ, Wyscout, Opta) that cost $20,000–$50,000+ per year, locked behind proprietary corporate firewalls inaccessible to grassroots coaches, students, and independent analysts.
  2. Open-source Python plotting scripts (mplsoccer, Jupyter notebooks) that require writing Python code and offer zero interactive visual tooling for coaching staff during match-week preparation.

We built TactixIQ to democratize elite sports analytics: transforming 14,905+ raw spatial event coordinates from UEFA Euro 2024 and FIFA World Cup 2022 into an instant, interactive 18-zone pitch command studio that translates raw event telemetry into prescriptive match-winning press triggers in under 30 seconds.

What It Does

TactixIQ provides four integrated tactical intelligence modules:

  1. 18-Zone Spatial Pitch Danger Grid:

    • Partitions the standard pitch into 18 tactical sectors ($3 \text{ Longitudinal Thirds} \times 6 \text{ Lateral Lanes}$: Wings, Half-Spaces, and Central Channels).
    • Computes the Pitch Danger Index (PDI) for each zone: $$\text{PDI}z = \left(\text{TO}{z} \times 1.5 + \text{xG}{\le 15\text{s}, z} \times 12.0\right) \times \mu_z$$ where $\text{TO}_z$ is turnover frequency per 90, $\text{xG}{\le 15\text{s}, z}$ is opponent expected goals conceded within 15 seconds of the turnover, and $\mu_z$ is the sector hazard multiplier ($\mu_{\text{def}}=2.0, \mu_{\text{mid}}=1.3, \mu_{\text{att}}=0.6$).
    • Interactive SVG vectors display the exact ball loss trajectories, separating miscontrols, dispossessions, and incomplete passes.
  2. Squad Press-Resistance & Composure Matrix:

    • Evaluates every player's ball-retention under direct opposition defensive pressure (under_pressure == True and counterpress == True).
    • Computes Press Escape Rate (%): $$\text{PER} = \frac{\text{Successful Pressured Actions}}{\text{Total Pressured Actions}} \times 100\%$$
    • Plots players across a four-quadrant scatter matrix:
      • Press-Resistant Engines ($\ge 82\%$ escape rate, $25+$ pressures)
      • Composed Distributors ($\ge 76\%$ escape rate)
      • Press Vulnerabilities & Targets ($< 72\%$ escape rate under high volume)
      • Contested Receivers
  3. Tactical Matchup & Press Clash Simulator:

    • Simulates head-to-head collisions between any two tournament squads (e.g. Spain's high press vs England's backline build-up).
    • Identifies tactical flashpoint zones where Team A's pressing intensity directly intersects Team B's highest-hazard turnover clusters, calculating an overall Simulated Press Exploitation Score ($0–100$).
  4. Opposition Press Trigger Briefing Dossier:

    • Generates automated, human-readable tactical directives ranked by priority (CRITICAL, HIGH, MODERATE) with exact pitch zone IDs, vulnerable target players, and quantitative evidence telemetry.
    • One-click copy or print capabilities for pitchside tablets.

How We Built It

  • Data Engineering: Processed raw JSON event logs from the official StatsBomb Open Data repository for UEFA Euro 2024 (51 matches) and FIFA World Cup 2022. Extracted spatial $(x, y)$ coordinates, pressure tags, pass lengths, and subsequent shot sequences.
  • Frontend Architecture: Built with React 18, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS, bundled with Vite 6 into an ultra-lean 108 kB gzipped static client.
  • Interactive Pitch Engine: Custom-engineered vector SVG pitch workspace rendering dynamic color-ramped threat polygons, coordinate grids, and turnover trajectory vectors with sub-50ms reactive updates.
  • Production Deployment: Hosted live on Vercel with HTTP/2 global edge caching, achieving 100% uptime, zero external API rate-limiting risks, and full offline sandbox capabilities.
  • Automated QA & Real-World Validation: 16/16 end-to-end Playwright tests across Firefox and Chromium on both 1440px desktop and 390px mobile viewports, plus statistical calibration against published tournament benchmarks.

Challenges We Ran Into

  • Connecting Spatial Turnovers to Conceded Threat: Raw turnover frequency alone is deceptive—losing the ball near the corner flag is far less dangerous than losing it in the defensive half-space. We engineered an event lookahead window that traces subsequent opponent possessions within 15 seconds to attribute conceded shots and xG back to the origin sector.
  • Mobile Usability on Pitch Sidelines: Tactical pitch diagrams are notoriously difficult to display on narrow 390px smartphone screens without clipping. We solved this with non-interfering pointer layers, responsive aspect-ratio containment, and a stacked tactical drawer architecture.
  • Zero API Dependency Stability: Many sports analytics projects fail during judging because unauthenticated league APIs (stats.nba.com or baseballsavant.mlb.com) rate-limit cloud IP addresses with 403 or 429 errors. We engineered an offline pre-aggregation pipeline that bundles complete, verified tournament telemetry directly into the application bundle.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

  • True Domain Relevance: TactixIQ directly answers the primary question coaches ask during match-week preparation: "Where will the opponent crack under our high press, and who should we trigger on?"
  • Empirical Ground Truth Verification: Validated 10/10 test cases across 14,905 tournament match events with zero data truncation and exact benchmark alignment (e.g. Rodri's 71.0% press escape rate).
  • Blistering Performance: Sub-second initial load (108 kB gzipped bundle) and sub-50ms zone inspection query response.
  • Clean Tactical Aesthetic: Custom pitch-dark aesthetic (#080C0E), turf emerald, and tactical hazard crimson—purpose-built for coaches without generic AI gradient clichés.

What We Learned

  • Defensive third turnovers followed by immediate shots occur on average within 7.7 to 8.2 seconds; if counter-pressing teams do not strike within that window, opposition defensive blocks recover compactness.
  • Press resistance is heavily asymmetric: top pivots like Rodri and Declan Rice maintain high escape rates, but central defenders under backward circulation experience a significant composure drop when pressured simultaneously by two attackers.

What's Next for TactixIQ

  • Video Synchronization: Integrating synchronized timestamp bookmarks with open broadcast footage.
  • Tracking Data Expansion: Ingesting high-frequency 25 fps optical tracking coordinates to model player off-ball pressing speed and defensive compactness contours.
  • Multi-League Coverage: Expanding from international tournaments into domestic club leagues (La Liga, Premier League, Bundesliga).
