Inspiration
Many years ago I joined Toastmasters to help improve my public speaking skills, and that was where I learned about "Table Topics". A participant is provided with a speaking prompt, they have a moment to think about it, and then they improvise a speech on it.
Everyday interactions now make it so difficult to ask thought-provoking questions. It feels like it's just a series of platitude and short responses ("How are you?" "Good"; "What are you up to this weekend?" "Not much, you?").
This app would be a great way for folks to learn more meaningful things about their colleagues. All asynchronously, too!
What it does
Two things:
- Users can watch videos recorded by other team members
- Users can record their own video, using a list of potential prompts to spark thought-provoking responses
How I built it
- I used NextJS
- Data is stored in a
sqlitedev.db
Challenges I ran into
There's just so much more I want to do with it, but time is a constraint for all.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
- This was my first time adding a
sqliteDB and using the API provided by NextJS, which was quite fun. (Usually there are completely separate back ends that I work with.) - It was also a lot of fun trying to design a
good-lookingOK-looking app on my own without pro designers helping out 😅
What's next for TabTop
- In order for the app to be "production-ready", it needs a few things:
- User authentication
- An admin interface for admins to 1. add team members, 2. manage the prompts (add, remove), 3. customize the background, and 4. be able to delete videos (content moderation is a big necessity for sure!).
Built With
- nextjs
- prisma
- sqlite
