TabSentry - Project Story
The Problem
I couldn't find a tab management system that worked for me. Browser tabs were getting out of control, and existing solutions felt clunky and manual.
The Vision
I wanted to bring conversational tab management to Chrome - imagine controlling your tabs just by talking to them. At the same time, I wanted to learn more about Chrome's new Prompt API.
Development Journey
I programmed TabSentry myself under the guidance of my mentor, who helped brainstorm ideas, warned me away from approaches that wouldn't work, and steered me in the right direction. It was a collaborative learning experience.
Key Challenges
The biggest challenge was figuring out the best way to implement AI features. I initially explored both the Prompt API and Summarizer API, testing which would work better for my use cases.
What I Learned
- The Prompt API proved superior for generating tags and translating natural language into function calls
- How to architect conversational AI in a browser extension context
- Extension development best practices and Chrome's permissions model
- On-device AI capabilities and limitations
The Result
TabSentry (Alpha) - a tab manager where you can say "Close all entertainment tabs" or "Save my programming tabs for later" and it just works. All powered by Google's on-device Prompt API, keeping everything private and fast.
Currently in alpha development, exploring what's possible when tab management meets conversational AI.
