Inspiration

When coming up with ideas for a project to do we wanted to do a silly project and not something ambitious. This made me think of a discord bot a friend of mine made a couple years back called Gerbot. So, i thought we could make one like that for our CS1 students. Then it turned into a semi-serious one.

What it does

It provides a pdf of information on CS1 topics when asked. It can also provide practice problems for said topic when asked. But most importantly it is a social bot. So you can (and should) have fun with it. The bot also has a feature that allows students to not get distracted by discord and times them out for 30 minutes upon request.

How we built it

Built using python and related discord api's. We chose not to use any LLM for chatting purposes. We parse the input for keywords and then we route the keyword to different responses. Its essentially a manual chat bot.

Challenges we ran into

Learning how to deploy a discord bot was the most "challenging" part. Furthermore based on the different command line being used, running the bot required some different commands.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

It having premade messages that it can send out randomly when prompted is what we are most proud of.
