It was truly inspiring to work on the TravelQuest project. The core idea of blending gamification with sustainable tourism for inbound travelers, especially focusing on the vibrant Vietnamese "digital-first" market and Japan's charming local regions, immediately resonated with me. I was particularly captivated by the vision of transforming a typical trip into an engaging adventure, where travelers become protagonists in their own stories, deeply connecting with the culture and people. The emphasis on psychological theories like Self-Determination Theory and the Hook Model for genuine user engagement, rather than superficial incentives, felt incredibly innovative and impactful. This project wasn't just about building an app; it was about creating a platform for meaningful cultural exchange and regional revitalization.

What I Learned

I learned a tremendous amount about the nuances of inbound tourism, particularly the specific pain points faced by Vietnamese travelers in Japan, such as navigation complexities and language barriers in rural areas. Simultaneously, I gained deeper insights into the challenges local Japanese communities face in attracting and retaining international visitors, like the need for better digital infrastructure and sustainable revenue models. Understanding the "chicken and egg" problem of attracting both travelers and local businesses was crucial. The project also highlighted the importance of narrative design in gamification—how a compelling story can elevate a simple task into a memorable experience that fosters deeper emotional connection. Furthermore, diving into the intricacies of a "Local Coin" economy and its legal implications (like the Payment Services Act) offered a fascinating lesson in integrating digital solutions with real-world economic impact.

How I Built My Project

Building TravelQuest was an exhilarating process, driven by a lean MVP (Minimum Viable Product) approach to validate the core concept quickly. I started by meticulously outlining the user journeys for quest discovery, acceptance, and completion, ensuring the flow was intuitive and engaging. The design prioritized a map-based interface with clear, visually appealing quest pins. For the prototype, I focused on implementing key gamification elements: the GPS check-in and photo upload for quest validation, a functional "Local Coin" wallet with a simulated QR code payment, and a basic user profile to display earned achievements and coins. The narrative design was central; I drafted compelling storylines for Hiroshima-specific quests that integrated local history, culture, and cuisine, aiming to provide a sense of "autonomy" and "competence" through choices and visible progress. While I used bolt.new as the specified tool for generating the high-fidelity prototype, my thought process involved designing for a cross-platform framework (like Flutter or React Native) and a cloud-native backend (AWS/GCP serverless) to ensure scalability and cost-efficiency in a real-world scenario.

Challenges I Faced

Despite the exciting vision, several challenges emerged. The primary one was addressing the "chicken and egg" problem: how do you attract travelers if there aren't enough local businesses and compelling quests, and vice versa? My solution focused on a concentrated "Hiroshima First" strategy, leveraging the new direct Hanoi-Hiroshima flight and collaborating closely with the Hiroshima Prefectural Tourism Federation (HIT) to create initial, high-quality, official content. Another challenge was ensuring the gamification didn't feel superficial or like a chore. This was tackled by deeply embedding the principles of Self-Determination Theory, ensuring quests offered genuine autonomy, competence, and relatedness, making the rewards intrinsic to the experience itself. Finally, considering the legal and technical complexities of the "Local Coin" system (especially regarding the Payment Services Act) required careful thought. For the MVP, I decided to simplify it to a redeemable coupon-like system within the app, while outlining future phases for more robust, legally compliant local currency integration, potentially through partnerships with existing platforms or direct municipal issuance.
