The Olympics are about teamwork and collaboration. We feel that fans should do the same.
You will be part of a something big. Raise your phones together to create an image in the audience!
We hope that people will do this in the 2024 Olympics.
Inspiration
We were inspired by the energy of cheers and fans at Olympic games to cheer for one's team and country. The fans collaborate to make color boards, large signs, huge balloons, and other wonderful visuals to support whomever they're cheering for.
What It Does
This project allows people to input their seat number to retrieve a solid color. These colors are individual pixels that add up to composite a larger picture. In such a way, strangers next to each other are joined by their energy and spirit, working together to cheer for their team.
The project is environmentally-friendly, saving people from making paper boards that waste tons of resources.
How We Built It
We used HTML5, CSS3, JS, and PaperJS.
Our prototype is based around the seating arrangement in Pauley Pavilion, one of the venues to host the Olympics 2024 games. It works on the 18 seats x 11 rows arrangement at the back of the stadium. Inputs only work within this range.
Nowadays, a lot of technology isolates people. We wanted to create technology that brings people together.
Challenges We Ran Into
Coming from a design angle, the code was a bit challenging because none of us were formal developers. The arrangement of seats differed from the linear order of array index items.
As a group of 3 designers, we photographed our team member Zeyu 100+ times sitting around on different seats to see what the overall picture would look like. It was a lot of exercise.
Accomplishments We're Proud Of
Actually coding a thing. Also duplicating Zeyu over a hundred times.
What We Learned
Javascript, HTML, CSS, 2D arrays, input forms, jquery,
What's Next for Olympico
A complete database of Olympic flags. Incorporating moving and animated images. Counter for number of people cheering at the current moment. Friendly user interface for organizers of event to upload, modify, change images. Adding accelerometer feature so people can cheer spontaneously, using their action to light up the phone.
