T-Map: Smarter Navigation for Electric Vehicles
Inspiration
As electric vehicles (EVs) become increasingly popular, one challenge remains: planning trips efficiently while accounting for battery range and charging infrastructure. Traditional navigation apps primarily optimize for the shortest or fastest route, but they rarely consider an EV driver's charging needs, charger availability, or overall travel experience.
T-Map was inspired by the idea that EV navigation should be more intelligent. Instead of simply telling drivers where to go, it should help them decide when and where to charge, making every journey more convenient and reducing range anxiety.
What it does
T-Map is an EV-focused navigation platform designed to help drivers plan trips intelligently.
Key features include:
- š Battery-aware route planning
- ā” Intelligent charging station recommendations
- š Vehicle-specific energy consumption estimation
- š Optimized routes that balance driving time and charging stops
- ā Community reviews and charging station information
- š½ļø Nearby restaurants, cafĆ©s, and services while charging
- šŗļø Multiple route options based on user preferences
The long-term vision is to make T-Map an all-in-one travel companion for EV owners.
How we built it
The project combines modern web technologies with mapping and routing services.
The architecture includes:
- Frontend for interactive maps and trip planning
- Backend APIs for route calculation and charging recommendations
- Geographic data processing
- Charging station datasets
- Battery consumption estimation algorithms
- Integration with external mapping and navigation services
The routing engine considers multiple factors instead of just distance:
- Remaining battery percentage
- Estimated energy consumption
- Charger locations
- Trip distance
- User preferences
This creates routes that are more practical for EV drivers than conventional navigation systems.
Challenges we ran into
Building an EV navigation platform introduced several challenges.
Charging infrastructure
Charging stations may have different charging speeds, connector types, operating hours, and availability. Normalizing this information into a consistent format required significant effort.
Route optimization
Finding the shortest path is straightforward, but finding the best EV route is a multi-variable optimization problem. The system must balance travel time, charging time, battery safety, and user convenience.
Battery estimation
Vehicle energy consumption depends on many variables, including:
- Vehicle model
- Driving speed
- Terrain
- Remaining battery
- Weather conditions
Developing a reasonable estimation model while keeping computations lightweight was an interesting engineering challenge.
User experience
Route planning should remain simple even though the underlying calculations are complex. We focused on presenting recommendations in an intuitive way without overwhelming the user.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we learned much more than just building a map application.
We gained experience in:
- Route optimization
- Geographic information systems (GIS)
- EV charging ecosystems
- Location-based services
- Data integration from multiple sources
- Designing products around real user problems
Perhaps the biggest lesson was that solving a transportation problem requires understanding both software engineering and real-world driving behavior.
What's next for T-Map
Our vision extends beyond navigation.
Future plans include:
- Real-time charger availability
- Charging queue prediction using AI
- Personalized route recommendations
- Fleet management support
- Community-powered reporting
- Smart charging cost optimization
- Travel planning with hotels and attractions
- AI-powered trip assistant
Ultimately, we hope T-Map can become the go-to navigation platform for EV drivers, making electric travel more convenient, efficient, and enjoyable.
