Inspiration
Flooding is one of the most frequent natural disasters in Indonesia, and it's something I've experienced personally. Whenever heavy rain falls, my family always asks the same questions: How much time do we have? What should we save first? Is it time to evacuate? Although flood warning systems can notify us that flooding may occur, they often don't tell us what actions to take next. That experience inspired me to create T.I.D.E., a platform that transforms flood warnings into personalised action plans so every minute before a disaster can be used effectively.
What it does
T.I.D.E. (Time-based Intelligent Disaster Evacuation) is an AI-powered decision support platform that transforms flood forecasts into clear, personalised recommendations.
By combining weather forecasts, river water level data, historical flood records, and community reports, T.I.D.E. estimates flood risks and provides a timeline of recommended actions, such as:
- Move important documents and electronics.
- Relocate vehicles to higher ground.
- Turn off electricity before water reaches dangerous levels.
- Prepare for evacuation.
Instead of simply telling users that a flood is coming, T.I.D.E. tells them what to do and when to do it.
How I built it
I designed T.I.D.E. as a concept by researching common challenges faced during floods and identifying the gap between flood warnings and practical decision-making from my personal experience.
The proposed system combines:
- Weather forecast data (BMKG)
- River and water-level monitoring
- Historical flood information
- Community reports
- AI-powered decision support
Together, these components generate personalised recommendations through a simple mobile interface.
Challenges I ran into
One of the biggest challenges was finding an innovative approach in a field where many flood monitoring systems already exist. I realized that the real opportunity wasn't creating another flood detector, but helping people understand what they should do next once a warning is issued.
Another challenge was designing recommendations that remain simple and actionable during stressful emergencies.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm proud of shifting the focus from flood detection to decision support.
Rather than developing another warning system, T.I.D.E. helps answer one important question:
"What should I do right now?"
I also designed the concept around a real problem that I have personally experienced, making the solution practical and user-centred.
What I learned
Through this project, I learned that technology should not only provide information, it should also help people make better decisions.
I also learned the importance of designing solutions around real human experiences instead of focusing only on technical features.
What's next for T.I.D.E.
In the future, I hope to:
- Integrate real-time IoT flood sensors.
- Collaborate with BMKG and local disaster management agencies.
- Add offline notifications for areas with limited internet connectivity.
- Expand the platform to support other disasters such as landslides, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and extreme weather.
My long-term vision is to make T.I.D.E. a trusted decision-support platform that helps communities prepare for disasters before they happen.
