T.H.I.S.

Inspiration

Life during the COVID-19 pandemic led to many feeling the effects of social isolation. There was little motivation to get out of bed, let alone work, and for students, this made the transition back to in-person learning incredibly difficult. We realized that kids and adults alike have this feeling, and it goes beyond work hours and into everyday tasks such as exercising, cooking, and cleaning. To combat feeling of isolation and increase motive to complete daily duties, we leveraged technology to connect people with shared interest and schedules to communicate and work in a fun, simple way!

What it does

T.H.I.S. takes your scheduled activities and finds a partner to partake in each activity with. It allows both SMS and calling to have someone keep you on track (as you do the same for them as well) during each task before moving onto the next one!

How we built it

To build T.H.I.S we utilized android studio for the frontend to create a functional platform, Firebase for the backend to handle data, and Twilios already existing SMS and voice platform for communications.

Challenges we ran into

Having to learn a new software and discover a method of integration in under 24 hours was definitely the hardest challenge. Furthermore, attempting to use Twilio in a unique way proved to be a complicated process. Instead of using it as intended, as a business to customer communication platform, we used Twilio itself as a middle party to string user conversations during their tasks.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud with our work with T.H.I.S.. Its seamless integration with mobile devices and use of preexisting applications demonstrates the thorough thorough analysis that led to deciding our topic.

What we learned

We learned how to use Twilio and Firebase. For many of us, this was the first time using Android Studio, so learning it was a valuable experience. Being able to apply computer science knowledge in the real world was the best benefit coming out of HackTJ.

What's next for T.H.I.S.

We hope to further validate our app with a bigger sample of users and append new features such as posting updates, having friends, and overall making this a task-based social media!
