Inspiration
It's easy to feel uncomfortable leaving equipment alone when trying to take a break from working at hackathons. Theft might not be a big issue in reality, but the risk is definitely can keep a hacker up at night. We decided to tackle this security issue by bringing in the public.
What it does
This lightweight theft-prevention tool is an automatic lock for your laptop and other valuables. Simply attach the device to the item you wish to secure, and start the program. Hook your phone up, and the computer will automatically lock down when you move far enough away. If a potential thief comes along to steal your property, (if motion is detected while you're not there, or the device is disconnected), an especially loud and annoying alarm will sound, alerting nearby people to check out what's happening. Additionally, the lockdown will prevent people from easily getting your valuable data.
How we built it
We built this using Java, Ionic, and Firebase as a database. The Java side reads the Firebase to grab information from the device and responds accordingly, while the Ionic side sends the data to the Firebase.
Challenges we ran into
We had trouble building ionic onto an android device. We also had difficulties checking if our phone is in range.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Using an accelerometer to send info to the database.
What we learned
We learned how to use Ionic and Firebase.
What's next for Swiper No Swiping
We would like to built a device small enough to fit in the SD Card slot, since our prototype right now is still pretty clunky.
