Inspiration

ADHD is frequently mischaracterized as a simple failure of focus and time management for neurodivergent brains. According to a national survey, "One-third (36 percent) feel their ADHD symptoms are not under control, and many more (58 percent) are not satisfied with their ability to handle stress." Every second is spent filtering out background noise and social cues within the working memory. However, as the environment demands more processing power than the brain has available, many higher education students with countless stressors and assignments are left with cognitive burnout and overload. We were inspired by the concept of "Cognitive Proprioception"- the ability to "feel" your cognitive load in real-time. We built SYNTEX to provide the "syntax", the structural rules, needed to turn sensory chaos into cognitive clarity and prevent burnout before it paralyzes the user.

What SYNTEX does

SYNTEX is a sensory operating system that proactively manages the user's cognitive capacity. Instead of creating an app that uses passive logging and tracking, it uses real-time environmental and biometric monitoring to map your "loads" such as tracking the user's location, background noise, and the complexity of tasks. When sensors detect that your sensory and mental load is approaching a critical threshold, the app automatically triggers modes such as alerts, screen dimming, and guided sensory resets to prevent overload.

How we built it

We utilized FigmaMake to create a personalized profile with a minimalist dashboard, a prioritized task list, generated insights prioritizing clarity to avoid overstimulating the user. In addition, all analysis happens locally, all while ensuring we monitor noise levels for sensory safety, conversations are never recorded and the user is in full control.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was keeping information minimal, without overstimulating the users. We wanted the app to flow smoothly without having to jump between tabs.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our "Dashboard," which distills complex sensory and biometric data into a calm, actionable visual. It proves that health-tech can be both scientifically rigorous and deeply human-centric.

What we learned

We learned that the most effective support tools for the neurodivergent community are those that act proactively that can monitor the user’s environment to prevent the burnout cycle from ever beginning.
