Inspiration
We were inspired by our own situation: 4 engineering students faced with an unnecessary amount of homework during reading week. By building this game, we were able to vicariously live out our homework free dreams, one in which we get points for not doing homework :)
What it does
This is a simple 'Runner'-style game. You use the spacebar to jump, and you get points for each homework assignment that you avoid (ironic, isn't it?). If you hit an assignment, the game ends and you are prompted to restart by hitting the spacebar again.
How we built it
We built it using python, with the pygame module, since python is the only language that all of us have experience in.
Challenges we ran into
There were quite a few challenges that we had to overcome:
- We were participating online, so we had to come up with a way in which we could all collaborate and code at the same time. We overcame this with 2 resources; https://codecollab.io/, and Github. We coded our initial draft on CodeCollab so that we could see what everyone was typing, and then for finetuning we used Github, and we would code on our personal computers and just push our changes. We had to do it this way because CodeCollab doesn't have a running function. We had tried to use Google Collab, but we couldn't use it since it couldn't connect to a video player for our game to run.
- None of us had coded a game before, so we had to learn all the basics of pygame while simultaneously making our game.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Even though our game is very simple, we are very proud of being able to make it. While we all had experience in python, it was very limited, so being able to make something like this was very cool and exciting.
What we learned
Now we know that the pygame module exists, as none of us even knew about it till Saturday. We also learned about classes in Python, and how they work and why they are useful, as previously we didn't really understand the,
What's next for Syntax Error
As of right now, not much, but hopefully we will see you again for HackED!
