Inspiration

The idea for DEMETER came from the increasing number of digital document fraud cases and the rise of AI-generated forgeries in financial and legal systems. We noticed that many organizations still depend on manual verification processes, which are slow, inefficient, and vulnerable to manipulation. This motivated us to create a secure and intelligent platform that could ensure trust, transparency, and legal validity in digital documentation.

What it does

DEMETER is an AI-powered document intelligence system that detects tampering, counterfeit documents, and synthetic identities using multi-layer analysis. It provides secure document management with role-based access, maintains complete audit trails, and ensures legal-grade chain of custody through cryptographic hashing and digital timestamps. The platform helps organizations automate compliance workflows, reduce fraud risks, and generate court-admissible digital evidence.

How we built it

We developed DEMETER using a modular architecture consisting of three main layers: document ingestion, AI-based fraud detection, and compliance management. The ingestion layer normalizes documents and generates cryptographic hashes. The AI layer analyzes documents through metadata validation, pixel-level inspection, and content consistency checks. The compliance layer maintains audit logs, version control, and explainable AI decisions. We integrated secure APIs, role-based authentication, and a user-friendly interface to ensure smooth system interaction.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was accurately detecting AI-generated and manipulated documents, as these are becoming increasingly realistic. Ensuring legal validity and designing a reliable chain of custody system required extensive research into regulatory standards. We also faced difficulties in obtaining high-quality datasets for training our models and integrating multiple technical components into a seamless platform.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully built a working prototype that can detect document tampering, generate audit trails, and maintain cryptographic integrity. We are proud of integrating explainable AI features and legal-grade evidence tracking into a single platform. Our system demonstrates how advanced technology can be applied to real-world compliance and security problems.

What we learned

Through this project, we gained practical experience in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and compliance system design. We learned how to implement cryptographic hashing, build explainable AI models, manage secure access control, and balance technical innovation with regulatory requirements. We also improved our teamwork, problem-solving, and project management skills.

What's next for DEMETER

In the future, we plan to enhance our AI models with larger and more diverse datasets, integrate blockchain-based verification, and support cross-border regulatory compliance. We also aim to develop real-time fraud intelligence sharing and expand the platform to industries such as insurance, healthcare, and government services.
