Inspiration
The idea for TripSync XR was inspired by the frustration of planning group holidays. Balancing different preferences, budgets, and schedules while navigating multiple booking platforms often takes the fun out of travel planning. Inspired by innovative VR experiences like immersive Airbnb previews, we envisioned a solution that combines seamless collaboration with the power of XR to make holiday planning as enjoyable as the trip itself.
What it does
TripSync XR transforms the group holiday planning process by providing a single, immersive platform where users can collaborate in real-time. It streamlines everything from deciding on flights, accommodations, and activities to building a dynamic itinerary and managing budgets. The platform’s standout features include:
Real-time voting and decision-making tools. Dynamic budget tracking for transparent cost sharing. An interactive itinerary builder to coordinate plans easily. By eliminating the need to juggle multiple tabs or suppliers, TripSync XR makes group travel planning intuitive and enjoyable.
How we built it
We used a combination of tools to design and prototype the platform:
Figma for wireframing and user interface design. ShapesXR to visualise and prototype spatial interactions in XR environments. Bezier to refine animations and transitions for an immersive experience. The iterative design process involved rapid prototyping and feedback to ensure a user-friendly and functional experience.
Challenges we ran into
Communication: With teammates in different time zones, we had to rely heavily on asynchronous updates and scheduled overlapping hours. Team Changes: One teammate withdrew mid-project, requiring us to redistribute responsibilities and adjust timelines. Hardware Limitations: Only one team member had access to a Meta Quest 3, limiting our ability to test collaboratively in a VR environment. Learning Curve: Being new to XR development, we had to familiarise ourselves with tools like ShapesXR and VR design principles, which slowed down initial progress.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Strong Team Communication: Despite challenges, we maintained honest and open communication, ensuring realistic deliverables and timelines. Deliverable Quality: We’re proud of the final prototype, which effectively conveyed our vision and demonstrated the potential of our concept. Adaptability: The ability to pivot and overcome challenges—especially as a small team with limited resources—was a significant achievement.
What we learned
Tool Mastery: We gained hands-on experience with XR design tools like ShapesXR and better understood prototyping for immersive environments. User Understanding: We deepened our knowledge of user behaviour in 3D spaces and how to design for collaboration and clarity in VR. Future Growth: Identified courses and resources to further develop skills in VR development and spatial design. Practical Insights: Learned how to manage distributed teams and maintain momentum in the face of resource constraints.
What's next for TripSyncVR
Gather Feedback: Share the prototype on online platforms and social media to gather user feedback for refinement. Collaborate Further: Seek out additional teammates, including developers and experienced designers, to build a working MVP. Explore Integration: Research potential integration into existing online booking platforms or partnerships with travel tech companies. Launch Strategy: Develop a roadmap for potential launch, including testing, user acquisition strategies, and funding opportunities. TripSync XR has the potential to redefine how group travel is planned, and we’re excited to see how it evolves! Not just a dribble project.
