Inspiration

Emily and I are both musicians and have played multiple instruments from a young age. We both want to pick up on a few more instruments. However, we don't have the time or money to hire a professional tutor, nor do we feel it's feasible to learn at this late stage in our lives. We wanted to build an app that lets us learn at our own pace while ensuring the form is correct.

What it does

Synchro is a self-paced musical learning application that provides visual tracking of progress in learning the user's instrument, as well as real-time-to-visual guidance on how to play it. The app provides mobility exercises, sheet music, and a tempo tracker to help the user sight-read and keep pace while practicing.

How we built it

We used Figma Make to help with the prototype of this application, along with the AI credits given to us with our Figma EDU accounts.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into some issues with Figma Make. Not only did we have to clarify our prompts multiple times to Figma Make for it to generate a feature the way we wanted, but it also failed to render proper anatomical images of limbs, such as fingers, arms, and hands. We had to explain this within the "Retrospective" portion of our presentation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Emily and I are both incredibly proud of our idea and how Figma Make could bring it to life.

What we learned

Firstly, we hadn't used FigmaMake before and were both shocked by its capabilities. This experience also gave us a chance to explore the realm of vibe-coding, which we hadn't had experience with. We also learned the importance of prompting. After realizing that Figma Make wasn't generating what we wanted, we realized that the prompts we were giving it had to be more precise than the ones we were feeding it. The last thing we learned was that the prototype wasn't automatically fitting the WCAG standards of accessibility until after we told it to double and triple check it. As we are both MS UX students, we understand the importance of accessibility.

What's next for Synchro - A Dexterity and Instrument Learning App

The next steps we also included in the presentation were scaling the product to other industries, such as health. As we showed in the demo, it would hypothetically be doctor-approved, and they can even prescribe the app itself to their patients. Patients could include people who suffer from arthritis or who, in general, need music therapy.
