Inspiration
We created SyncED because students should still be able to learn even when they do not have reliable internet access. Many learning platforms depend on a constant internet connection, which can make it difficult for students with limited or unstable Wi-Fi to access lessons and complete schoolwork.
Our goal was to create a platform where students could download learning materials while connected to Wi-Fi, continue learning offline, and sync their progress once they reconnect.
What it does
SyncED is an offline-first learning platform designed to keep educational content available with or without internet access.
Students can:
- Download lessons, worksheets, and learning resources while online
- Access downloaded content without Wi-Fi
- Save progress locally on their device
- Sync progress after reconnecting
- View downloaded lessons, storage space, and last sync information
- Use accessibility features such as multilingual support and plain-language mode
- Track assignments, progress, and learning streaks
How we built it
We built SyncED as a Progressive Web App (PWA) so it can work across different devices while supporting offline functionality.
The main user flow is:
Connect → Download → Learn Offline → Save Locally → Reconnect → Sync
When internet access is available, lesson content can be downloaded and stored locally. If the student loses connection, SyncED continues using the saved content. Progress is also stored locally and can later be synchronized when the device reconnects.
We also designed the interface to make important information, such as downloaded lessons, progress, storage, and sync status, easy to find.
Challenges we faced
One of our biggest challenges was designing the app around unreliable internet connections.
We had to think about situations such as:
- Downloads being interrupted
- Wi-Fi disconnecting during a lesson
- Saving progress while offline
- Preventing progress from being lost
- Showing users which content is available offline
Another challenge was balancing features with simplicity. We wanted SyncED to be useful without making the interface overwhelming.
What we learned
Building SyncED taught us that offline applications require more than simply downloading files. They also need to manage local storage, caching, synchronization, connection changes, and possible failures.
We learned more about:
- Progressive Web Apps
- Offline data storage
- Caching
- Synchronization
- UI/UX design
- Testing
- Backend architecture
We also tested the prototype through 10 different functionality checks, and it successfully passed all 10.
What's next
We want to continue improving SyncED by adding more educational content, strengthening synchronization, expanding accessibility features, and testing the platform with larger groups of students.
Our long-term goal is simple:
Learning shouldn’t stop when Wi-Fi does.
