Inspiration
As developers, we spend countless hours writing code but still lose time on repetitive Git commands and setup just to get our work online.
During a late-night sprint, I realized how much mental load those steps add.
We wanted a tool that feels like magic: click once and your local project is on GitHub. That spark gave birth to Sync-Smith.
What it does
Sync-Smith lets developers push local projects to GitHub with a single click.
It authenticates securely, creates a new repository (or selects an existing one), commits changes, and pushes everything automatically — no terminal, no friction.
How we built it
We built the backend with Django and its frameworkS to handle authentication and API calls.
GitHub OAuth handles secure access tokens.
On the frontend we used HTML, Tailwind CSS, and JavaScript to provide a clean, responsive UI.
Under the hood, a Python service executes git operations, wraps them into safe tasks, and reports status back to the user in real time.
It’s like turning
{many git commands} = {one click}
in mathematical form.
Challenges we ran into
- Managing secure storage of GitHub tokens without exposing secrets.
- Dealing with edge cases like large repos, initial commits, and branch mismatches.
- Designing a UI simple enough for non-experts but powerful enough for advanced users.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A working prototype that truly syncs a local folder to GitHub with a single click.
- Clean integration between Django backend and GitHub’s API.
- A user-friendly interface that hides complexity without sacrificing control.
What we learned
We deepened our understanding of OAuth, background job handling, and error-resilient automation.
We also learned that small UX touches (progress bars, friendly error messages) can turn a technical tool into something developers actually enjoy using.
What's next for Sync-Smith
- Adding support for GitLab and Bitbucket alongside GitHub.
- Automatic CI/CD setup right after pushing.
- Packaging Sync-Smith as a desktop app and VS Code extension so developers can sync from anywhere.
- More robust analytics and notifications to keep users informed of sync status.
