Inspiration

SYNC'd was born from a Channel 5 video. Andrew Callaghan, the journalist known for documenting the raw unfiltered corners of America, made an observation that stopped me mid-scroll: loneliness is rising, and when people feel isolated, they reach for anything that offers a sense of purpose or belonging. That line hit differently. Not because it was new, but because it was true in a way I recognized personally. We live in an era of infinite connection and yet record levels of disconnection. Dating apps give us volume. Social media gives us performance. Neither gives us the thing we actually want: someone who genuinely gets us.

The data tells the same story. The APA found that 1 in 3 U.S. adults feel lonely at least once a week, and by 2025, 69% of adults reported needing more emotional support than they received. Harvard's Making Caring Common project identified adults aged 30 to 44 as the loneliest group in the country. The WHO declared in 2025 that 1 in 6 people globally are affected by loneliness, a crisis linked to over 870,000 deaths every year. And when researchers asked what was driving it, 73% of Americans pointed to technology, not because we use too much of it, but because we have been using it wrong. SYNC'd was built to change that.

What it does

SYNC'd is a social discovery platform that matches people through their Digital DNA, meaning the music they stream, the films they watch, and the books they read, rather than curated photos and bios. It connects to Spotify, Apple Music, Netflix, Letterboxd, Goodreads, and Kindle to build a real-time portrait of who you actually are. A Weighted Similarity Algorithm then calculates a compatibility percentage with other users, giving extra weight to niche and obscure tastes, because sharing an underground indie artist means far more than both liking Drake. A GIS-powered Vibe Forecast heatmap shows geographic hotspots where people with your specific profile are concentrated, and a Meetups Tab cross-references your wishlist of local spots with your matches to suggest the perfect real-world first meeting place. The result is a low-anxiety, data-driven path to genuine human connection.

How we built it

I built SYNC'd solo using Medo AI's app builder, translating each feature into carefully structured prompts to bring the product to life, from the compatibility algorithm logic to the glassmorphism UI. The design process was highly intentional. I described the aesthetic in precise terms, including semi-transparent containers, soft blurs, a vertical gradient from sky blue to pale lavender, and pastel accent colors, then iterated through prompts until the interface matched the calm and modern experience I had in mind. The core matching logic was developed by defining the Weighted Similarity Algorithm in plain language, specifying how niche-value scoring would work and how shared consumption data across the three pillars of Waves, Scenes, and Pages would be weighted and combined. I specified OAuth 2.0 authentication as a requirement from the start to ensure user data was handled securely without storing credentials. The entire build was a process of translating a clear product vision into structured prompts, proving that a strong idea, when articulated well, can become a real product.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was the idea itself. Identifying a problem that was both deeply personal and statistically significant, and then designing a solution that did not feel like a gimmick, took far more iteration than any technical hurdle. Most social apps address loneliness by giving people more people.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am most proud of the idea itself and the fact that it genuinely addresses one of the most pressing social crises of our time. In a space crowded with apps that optimize for engagement and addiction, SYNC'd optimizes for meaning. The concept of Digital DNA as a compatibility layer is something I have not seen executed in this way before, and I am proud that every feature, from the Vibe Forecast heatmap to the Sync-Tattoo milestones, flows logically from that single core insight. I am also proud of the design.

What we learned

I learned that the quality of what you build with AI tools is almost entirely determined by the quality of your thinking before you open the tool. Medo AI did not build SYNC'd. My obsessive clarity about the problem, the user, the algorithm, and the aesthetic built it. The AI executed. That lesson reshaped how I think about no-code and AI-assisted development: it is not a shortcut, it is an amplifier.

What's next for SYNC'd

The immediate next step is making SYNC'd usable by moving from concept to a testable real-world product. That means completing the OAuth 2.0 integrations with Spotify, Apple Music, Netflix, Letterboxd, and Goodreads so the Digital DNA engine is pulling live data. From there, my priority is beta testing the Weighted Similarity Algorithm with real users to validate whether the niche-value scoring actually produces matches people feel are meaningful. I also want to expand the Meetups Tab into a fuller feature by partnering with local venues and experiences so that the bridge from digital match to real-world meeting is as frictionless as possible.

Beyond the core pillars, I plan to significantly expand the range of platforms SYNC'd can connect to. Gaming is the most obvious and exciting next frontier. Integrating with Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Live activity, Nintendo Switch playtime and game libraries, Steam, and PlayStation Network would add a fourth pillar to the Digital DNA engine, capturing one of the richest and most revealing data sources about how a person thinks and what worlds they choose to inhabit. I also plan to integrate with Strava for fitness and running habits, Duolingo for language learning, Letterboxd already being included will be expanded to pull watchlist data more deeply, and platforms like VSCO and Behance for creative and visual interests. Podcast listening through Spotify and Pocket Casts would bring in yet another dimension of intellectual identity. Each new integration makes the Digital DNA portrait more complete and the matches more meaningful.

Longer term, I see SYNC'd expanding beyond one-to-one matching into community discovery, helping people find their people at scale, whether that is a weekly film club, a gaming squad, a book group, or a neighbourhood of people who share your exact cultural fingerprint.
