Inspiration
Polypharmacy is a silent global killer. We were inspired by the terrifying reality that while individual drugs are safe, their "cocktails" often aren't. We wanted to move away from static medical databases and use Retool to create a visual "Collision Lab"—allowing clinicians to see a lethal reaction before it ever reaches the patient.
What it does
SYNAPSE is an AI-powered internal tool for clinicians to simulate drug-to-drug interactions. Doctors drag medications into a central Collision Zone to visualize real-time toxicity. The app dynamically adjusts logic based on Patient Vulnerability Profiles (Pediatric, Geriatric, etc.) and utilizes AI to generate a one-page, EHR-ready clinical report with peer-reviewed pharmacological rationales.
How we built it
We used Retool Assist (AppGen) to rapidly prototype the initial dashboard structure. From that foundation, we used Retool’s drag-and-drop components and custom CSS to build a "Medical Command Center" aesthetic. We integrated Retool AI as a clinical research assistant to analyze complex biochemical data and used JavaScript to handle the real-time scoring logic within the UI.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was Data Density. Pharmacological data is overwhelming. We had to iterate extensively on the UI to prevent "cognitive overload." We solved this by refining our Retool layout to include hover-to-reveal biometrics and collapsible AI panels, ensuring the interface remained clean while still providing deep diagnostic depth.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully transformed a complex backend problem into a Zero-Cognitive Load UX. We are particularly proud of the AI-Drafted Clinical Memo feature; it doesn't just show data—it automates the #1 doctor pain point: administrative documentation. We created a tool that feels production-ready and hospital-grade in just a few days.
What we learned
We learned the power of Iterative AI Development. Retool AppGen gave us the "bones," but the real value came from collaborating with the AI to refine the UX. We also learned the importance of Ethical AI in healthcare—positioning our tool as a "Co-pilot" that supports, rather than replaces, human clinical judgment.
What's next for SYNAPSE: The Drug Collision Lab
Our roadmap includes connecting real-time Genomic API data to predict interactions based on a patient's DNA. We also plan to build a Safe-Alternative Engine within Retool Workflows that suggests "collision-free" substitutes, further reducing the research time for clinicians while maintaining their final authority.
