Inspiration
We were inspired by our own experiences in Minecraft, with Josh especially having a long history of Minecraft PVP. We wanted to make something that could add to the traditional Minecraft gameplay to make some items do new and exciting things.
What it does
This Minecraft mod is an expansion on the usual PVP experience. The players can pick between 10 different kits that allow you to do a variety of different things, such as launching yourself or getting heightened speed. Then, they are teleported to an arena where they can battle with their new tools. Upon one player's death, both are teleported back to the lobby, where they can pick another set of kits and play again!
How we built it
Using the language Skript, we started by making the round-based system function. Then, we were able to begin building the code for each of the changed weapons in the kits. After building the lobby and the arena, we put the kits together to ensure that they could be regenerated after use.
Challenges we ran into
The main we had was that although Josh knew Skript, it was Everett's first time using it, which meant he had to learn a new language. This was a higher level language than Everett was accustomed to working with, and at first he found it difficult because of the detachment from the coding logic he was used to.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the fact that we were able to make a project we both care about and find to be exciting!
What we learned
We both learned a lot about coding, mods, and their implementation. We also both learned a lot about what it is like to code a lot in a short amount of time, as opposed to the usual long-term format of projects that we tend to have in our courses. Coding one project for 24 hours is very different from coding when you have several days or a week to do it, and the hackathon taught us how to manage our time as efficiently as possible.
What's next for symons-greer hackathon
We are excited to use this mod to play with our friends and see what they think! Everett is going to send the mod to his little brother to let him experience it. As people play our game, we will be able to update it and add more features. Our code allows us to easily add more kits if inspiration strikes, so we have plenty of room to expand our creation.
