Inspiration

Physics is stalled by scattered data and siloed theories. We wondered: what if AI could unify them and spark the next breakthrough?

What it does

Symmetry maps all major theories, analyzes any uploaded dataset, and uses GPT-4o to propose testable new physics - instantly, in one workspace.

How we built it

Bolt.new + React front-end, vis-network for the theory graph, OpenAI for reasoning, Papa Parse for data

Challenges we ran into

Graph performance at scale, prompt-engineering GPT-4o for rigorous outputs, and avoiding circular imports that crashed the vis loader.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

First AI tool to auto-generate coherent, LaTeX-ready theories; live reconciliation of GR vs QFT; active beta-tests by physicists in 48 hours.

What we learned

Context beats length. Tight, domain-rich prompts produce far more rigorous GPT-4o outputs than brute-forcing token counts or temperature tweaks.

Graphs are everything. A semantic network of theories lets the AI reason locally and globally; without that structure, suggestions drift.

Scientists want traceability. Beta users demanded inline citations, data-lineage breadcrumbs, and exportable LaTeX - features we’ve now baked in.

What's next for Symmetry

We will begin by weaving in deep-data connectors: automatic arXiv citations, CERN/LHC open datasets, PubChem, and the PDB - so chemistry and biology modules ignite alongside physics. Next, we’ll broaden our cross-disciplinary engines, extending the theory-graph schema to reaction mechanisms and gene-regulatory networks, turning Symmetry into a truly pan-science workspace. From there, we’ll spin Symmetry into a venture-backed company devoted to “new-science creation,” keeping the platform open-core while offering premium researcher tools. An AI co-author beta will draft full papers - abstract, methods, results, references - ready for expert review. Finally, a community marketplace will let scientists trade datasets, hypotheses, and experiment blueprints, accelerating peer-driven discovery.
