Inspiration

SYMBLS was inspired by the addictive nature of emoji-based puzzles and the chaotic humor of internet culture, aiming to create a "Maximum Brain Rot Edition" of a Wordle-like game focused on memes, crypto degeneracy, and Reddit humor, designed to be both challenging and deeply engaging for online communities.

What it does

SYMBLS is an emoji-based puzzle game where players decipher internet slang and memes across various modes like Daily, Unlimited, Nightmare, Speed Run, Multi-step, Contextual, Themed, and Meta puzzles, complemented by leaderboards, a progression system with XP and ranks, achievements, daily quests, and social features including a live Reddit feed integration and offline play capabilities.

How we built it

SYMBLS was developed as a Progressive Web App (PWA) using React with Vite for the frontend, Framer Motion for dynamic animations, and Tailwind CSS for styling, while leveraging Supabase for its PostgreSQL database, Edge Functions, and Row-Level Security for backend operations, user data, and community content, with a Service Worker enabling robust offline functionality.

Challenges we ran into

Key challenges included creating a highly animated and visually distinct "brain rot" aesthetic while ensuring smooth performance and accessibility across devices, implementing robust offline-first data synchronization with the Supabase backend, managing real-time data for leaderboards, and designing complex game logic for diverse puzzle modes.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are particularly proud of the game's engaging and unique visual style, its comprehensive feature set that extends beyond simple puzzles, the robust offline capabilities with seamless data synchronization, the community-driven content submission system, the real-time leaderboards, and the scalable architecture built on modern web technologies.

What we learned

Developing SYMBLS provided valuable insights into advanced frontend animation techniques with Framer Motion, the intricacies of full-stack PWA development including service workers and offline strategies, practical application of the Supabase ecosystem for backend and real-time features, and the importance of balancing engaging game design with accessibility and user experience.

What's next for SYMBLS

Future plans for SYMBLS include continuously expanding puzzle content, enhancing social features with friend challenges and clan systems, developing a comprehensive tournament platform, introducing global events and seasonal content, exploring monetization strategies, and potentially expanding to native mobile platforms, all while investigating advanced AI integration for personalized experiences.
