Inspiration
We were inspired by Pokémon GO’s location-based gameplay and Microsoft Rewards system for being able to earn "climate coins".
What it does
Symbiosis encourages sustainable living by assigning tasks—like biking, recycling, or planting a tree to earn Climate Coins. Users compete on a community leaderboard to maximize environmental impact.
How we built it
- We built Symbiosis using Flutter for Android and iOS compatibility.
- The backend, powered by Firebase, handles task tracking, coin allocation, and leaderboard updates.
- The UI was crafted in Figma and has a clean, simple, and minimalist look which is very easy to use.
Challenges we ran into
- Implementing real-time leaderboard with Firebase posed latency issues.
- Designing inclusive tasks for diverse user lifestyles was tough.
- Verifying user-reported eco-actions to prevent fraud also required creative solutions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re thrilled to have built an addictive, Pokémon GO-style app for sustainability and delivering a polished Flutter app are major milestones for us.
What we learned
Using phone APIs, like the pedometer for step-tracking tasks and geolocation services for location-based challenges, deepened our understanding of integrating native device features to enhance user engagement and verify eco-friendly actions.
What's next for Symbiosis
- We’ll add location-based tasks inspired by _Pokémon GO.
- Integrate AI for personalized challenges.
- Expand to make a separate global leaderboard.
