Inspiration

I'm a lover of wine and food, and I especially enjoy finding the perfect pairing for my dishes. As a non-technical person, I've been dreaming about building an app like this for many years and it's finally here!

What it does

Simply snap a picture of whatever you're eating, and the AI-powered sommelier will identify the food and recommend wines that pair perfectly with that dish.

How we built it

Solo project built in 3 days! This app was built on Bolt using the OpenAI API for food identification and pairings. Used Cursor for some final app polish. It works really well in Expo for iOS but still tweaking the Android version!

Challenges we ran into

Fine-tuning the food identification piece. We want it to be very accurate—not only what the dish is broadly, but also to identify all the ingredients—but we don't want it to be too slow either. That's something I'll continue to fine-tune over time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The first time the app correctly identified the "ripe banana" that I took a photo of! The pairings were also perfect. Such a thrill.

What we learned

You have to be pretty specific with AI vibe coding apps, specifically as it relates to how much creative leeway you want to give it. Sometimes I would request a simple change, and the agent would make drastic changes I didn't ask for. Setting the ground rules for how exploratory the AI can be was challenging but necessary.
