Inspiration
When I was driving home one day, I wanted to pick up some refreshing latte along the way. I searched on Yelp but realized that half of the results were in the opposite direction, moreover, there are no good coffee shops near my place. It is also impossible for me to search from the middle points along the route because it is too much hassle. Therefore I created this app to alleviate the stress that everyone has -- finding short detours along trip routes.
What it does
Swingby is very easy to use. Users simply input the origin, destination, the category, and the maximum detour time and a list of Yelp reviews will be shown sorted by the rating!
How we built it
Our back-end server is Python with Django, and our front-end is Javascript with various frameworks such as jQuery, Bootstrap, and Mustache We also utilized Google Maps API's direction service and Yelp API's search service
Challenges we ran into
Since we have only two people on the team, it was a lot of work. One of us handled the front-end while the other one handled the back-end.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully achieved our initial goal. We are now able to find places to swing by on the way home!
What we learned
What's next for Swingby
There are many improvements that can be made for Swingby such as a larger distance cap, customized category filter, and a neater UI.
