Inspiration
Scammers work hard, but research has shown that when people are aware of specific scams, they are significantly less likely to fall for them. Research has also shown how harmful scams can be to mental health and how isolating they can be for the people that experience them. We think that people, deserve to keep the earnings of their hard work and not have them stolen from them by scammers that utilize a variety of methods to escape justice.
What it does
It is a website that depends on certain predetermined factors, you can learn more about the scams that are most likely to target you.
How we built it
We created a website using Velo and hyperlinked all of the learn more pages to the home page.
Challenges we ran into
We originally intended for the website to have an app portion built on React and using Twilio where people would fill out a form to subscribe to scams in their area. There would be another form where you can upload a scam that would get sent out to everyone subscribed that has the same zip code as the swindle reported. Originally, there were going to be 2 dropdown menus with risk factors and once a person hit submit, they were going to be redirected to a page with their custom scams. However, none of these components worked by submittal time so all that works is the main website.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to create a website that nobody on the team had ever done before. We were able to successfully build a component of the react app with some basic UI.
What we learned
We learned a lot about react and how much we still have left to go in the building of web applications and connecting with REST APIs.
