Inspiration
The reality for people living in rural areas for most of the developing world is that there is no doctor nearby. As a result, they have to travel long distances and spend considerable time and money in order to get to the nearest clinic. With the increasing availability of mobile networks and mobile internet even in rural areas we now have new opportunities to provide better healthcare.
What it does
SwiftSense is a platform that empowers local community health workers in rural communities to facilitate consultations with remote doctors. It enables them to gather high-quality clinical history and conduct clinically-relevant physical exams.
How we built it
We used OpenMRS, an application which enables the design of a customized medical records system with no programming knowledge (although medical and systems analysis knowledge is required). It is a common framework upon which medical informatics efforts in developing countries can be built. It acts as our CMS where we fetch data to the android app. We built an android app that collects data of patients. The android app also displays information of existing patients which can be synced into the app by doctors or health workers.
Challenges we ran into
Integrating the OpenMRS with the mobile app.
What we learned
We learnt about OpenMRS, an open-source medical records system. We learnt how to build our own web-app from OpenMRS.
What's next for SwiftSense
Improve the user interface of the mobile app.
