Inspiration

As first year university students we are still unfamiliar with our uni city and all the facilities it has. We created this idea to help those in need of finding study places and allow others to recommend them, too. Another key idea for this was to create a map which also shows you the nearest sweet treat spot, so you always have a little motivation near you.

What it does

This website maps out the nearest sweet treat spots based on a certain geographical input, it also showcases the study spots available in your university city (currently only in Durham), and allows users to input their own spots.

How we built it

We used the google maps API along with the open source leaflet to geocode the data and represent the locations on the map. Half of our team were polishing up their backend REST skills with use of Django rest framework and the front end is on react.

Challenges we ran into

As we were learning alongside coding, we ran into some issues with getting our code to work well. Half of our team was using REST on the front end, while the rest was working on Django, this made combining these two a little challenging. A main issue that occurred was using GIT hub efficiently, as we faced some merge conflicts and accidental deletion of code while trying to GIT PUSH.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are all really proud of our final complete work, the way we managed to crack our new skills and still managed to have fun!

What we learned

We all had certain new skills we wanted to learn during this hackathon: this being using REST and DJANGO, in the end, we all used these efficiently and were even able to merge them together!

What's next for Sweet Study Spots

We really want to expand on our idea and want to bring it to other universities and even on a more global scale. We also want to incorporate AI into sweet study spots, by training AI so you can get recommendations based on input preferences!
