Inspiration

As a group of avid music listeners, we are incredibly disheartened by the sheer amount of explicit content in popular music today. In the past, artists had to release a clean-edited version of all their music since radios aren't allowed to air profane songs. Still, nowadays, artists disregard radio and publish only to streaming platforms, which have no restrictions on the explicitness of songs. As a result of these issues, today, over 50% of the songs on the Billboard Top 100 Chart are chockful of explicit lyrics. We wanted to create a family-centric music streaming platform full of innovative features to create the best and most holy listening experience for families.

What it does

Our app stands out because all music on the platform is clean-edited. Users can be assured that they will never stumble across an expletive while listening to their music. Another feature our app has is multiple listening profiles under one account. This allows parents and their children to keep their music and preferences separate. Additionally, parents have parental controls to look over what their kids are listening to and hide certain content they don't want the kids exposed to.

How we built it

We built the app using Flutter. Flutter is an open-sourced app development kit made by Google and used by many to make mobile applications. We sourced the clean edits from community-made edits on YouTube which we stream on our platform using the YouTube API.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge we faced was the steep learning curve as we all were new to Flutter and mobile development. We ran into many small problems as part of this, from simple challenges like how to create basic designs all the way to complicated issues like how to route the app and manage user state.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of making an app using Flutter as we have never used it before. We're also proud of participating in our first hackathon. But above all else, we're happy that we, as young people, got the opportunity to make our own positive impact on the world while having fun.

What we learned

We learned how to use Flutter. We learned how to split work up among our team, and while creating this submission and our presentation we are learning how to effectively share our projects with others.

What's next for Sweepd Music

We look to add more and more features to our app and create a more comprehensive and robust platform to ensure our users have the best experience possible. We believe we can utilize AI technologies to clean the music on our own automatically to minimize our dependence on YouTube edits.
