Inspiration
A saved nail photo does not show how a design will look on your own hand. SwatchRoom helps people turn a folder of inspiration into a personal, considered nail set and a brief they can take to a nail artist.
What it does
Explore 100 original nail-art references and 50 solid colours. Search for a mood or style, choose a different look for each finger, and generate a YouCam preview on a sample hand or an uploaded photo. Compare three favourites, keep a collection that survives refresh, and download a salon brief with colour, art, shape, length and material preferences.
This is a fitting room and planning tool. There are no prices, orders or payment claims. Material preferences communicate a salon request; the image does not simulate physical acrylic, gel or wear performance.
How we built it
React and TypeScript power the studio, using Vinext and a Cloudflare-compatible server route. YouCam Nail Virtual Try-On produces the hand previews. Its File API handles approved photo and artwork uploads, and signed task references let the browser poll without receiving the API key. Cloudflare D1 enforces persistent preview limits and a cooldown on the public deployment. SVG art recipes generate separate polish textures, extension silhouettes and thumb references.
The save experience stores collection metadata and preview pixels on the device, so temporary provider URLs do not erase the saved image. Uploaded photos are re-encoded before processing to limit dimensions and remove metadata. They require explicit processing consent.
Challenges
Nail polish textures and press-on references need different preparation. Transparent margins and painted-on highlights initially created flat cuticle edges and a pasted-on appearance. We separated the reference pipelines, rounded the extension bases and shortened thumb proportions. Results remain virtual approximations, and some patterns can still look flat.
What we learned
A complete beauty tool needs more than a generated image: browsing, per-finger decisions, clear limits, comparison, persistence and a usable salon brief all matter. A provider task succeeding is only one part of the experience.
Next steps
Validate more hand photos and lighting conditions, improve patterned extension proportions, and explore optional account-based syncing. No user study, conversion improvement or clinical outcome is claimed.
