SWARM (Smart Warehouse-to-site Aerial Response Mobility)was created to make local delivery faster, safer, and more efficient by reducing reliance on road-based transportation. The program uses VTOL UAVs to deliver small, urgent items directly from a warehouse to nearby delivery locations. We built the concept by combining UAV design, mission planning, local weather analysis, payload requirements, battery performance, and FAA operating considerations. Our biggest challenge was developing a realistic 3D flight environment that simulates the weather conditions the drone would face in Columbia, South Carolina, including wind, temperature, precipitation, terrain, obstacles, payload, battery use, and safe routing. We are proud to have developed a complete UAV delivery concept with a defined mission, operating environment, target customers, and safety considerations. Through this project, we learned that drone delivery requires engineering, logistics, weather planning, regulatory compliance, and customer value to work together. Next, we will improve the drone design, validate flight performance through simulation, refine the business model, and prepare for controlled test flights.
