Inspiration
College students often have valuable skills — coding, music, photography, languages — but no easy or affordable way to trade them with each other. Paid tutoring is expensive, and there's no structured space on campus for informal peer-to-peer learning. We wanted to build something that lets students exchange knowledge directly, without money changing hands.
What it does
Swapp is a campus skill-exchange app where students trade what they know for what they want to learn.
- Browse skills other students are offering and request a swap using time-credits instead of cash
- Post in a campus Forum to find swap partners, ask questions, or organize group sessions
- Rate each swap afterward, building trust through visible ratings
- Track a learning streak to stay motivated
- Sign up with a verified school/college email only, keeping the community campus-specific
How we built it
Swapp is built as a single-page web app using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, hosted for free on GitHub Pages. The interface uses a custom purple/lavender design system, an animated splash screen, and a full signup/login flow restricted to academic email domains. Skill listings, forum threads, and ratings are all interactive and persist per-session.
Challenges we ran into
As a solo, non-developer builder, the biggest challenge was learning how to structure a multi-screen app experience (splash → auth → main app) and wire up interactive features like the rating system and streak tracking without a traditional backend.
What we learned
We learned how freemium monetization models can be designed around genuine value (unlimited swaps, priority matching, verified certificates) rather than paywalling the core experience, and how important trust signals (ratings) are for peer-to-peer platforms.
What's next for Swapp
- A real backend (Firebase) so the forum, credits, and accounts are shared across all users instead of stored locally
- Real email verification for school/college sign-ups
- Smart skill-matching suggestions
- Paid group workshops hosted by Premium userspiration
