Introducting, SwampSearch
Inspiration
As four freshmen, we all have had the experience of having way too many opportunities and way too many clubs to join. Something to simplify the discovery process would definitely be helpful to us and other college freshmen.
What it does
By parsing GatorConnect and Instagram, SwampSearch displays upcoming events and active organizations. The map allows convenience in terms of location, and the sheer amount of filters allows easy searching for events and orgs you actually want to see.
How we built it
The UI and website framework were designed using Figma. All of us collaborated through GitHub and programmed through VS Code. The Backend was built off . The Frontend was built off __. The website is hosted by GoDaddy.
Challenges we ran into
Most of us did not have prior knowledge of certain APIs, frameworks, and even languages before starting on the project. Additionally, much of the git functionality was a challenge because of the challenge of coordination and how inexperienced we are with Git.
Accomplishments that we're proud of!
We were able to come together and complete a finished product with similar scope to that which we had in practice.
What we learned...
We learned that APIs can be very challenging and finnicky unless you understand them well. Also, the use of AI in programming can help speed up your workflow, but you must be aware of your architecture and your prompts must be very specific, or your entire codebase could be destroyed without you knowing why. AI is a convenience for novices, but it's easy to imagine how powerful it has the potential of being when a skilled programmer uses it.
What's next for SwampSearch?
If we continue on the project, the next step will be pushing SwampSearch to other colleges! The framework is basically the same for any college, and no student should feel overwhelmed by opportunities.
